Beginning Monday July 12, a crew from Nicom Coatings, Inc. of Barre, Vermont will be in Rochester for up to two weeks performing pavement maintenance on several dozen streets in the City. The pavement maintenance will focus on sealing cracks that are beginning to form on streets that were paved within the past seven years and are now beginning to show signs of cracking to the surface. It is important to seal these cracks before too much moisture gets into and through the cracks and enters the sub soil material beneath the pavement where expansion and contraction as well as wheel action of the passing vehicles work to rapidly expand the number and prevalence of cracks. This is a cost effective means of slowing the rate of degradation of the condition of our streets, particularly those that the city invested significant money in during this decade. The names of the streets that are slated for cracksealing are attached. Included in this effort are the downtown streets including South Main Street, Wakefield Street, Union Street, and North Main Street in the downtown square area. Work will be directed to these streets later in the week. It is expected that traffic will be shifted to one lane in the downtown area while these crews are present.
Cracksealing crews tend to move quickly and can be somewhat spread out while on a street. Since there are streets scheduled for cracksealing located throughout the city, motorists should exercise extreme care while traveling through the cracksealing work zone, as they could be encountered anywhere within the city limits during this time
